Pokémon Go trainers participating in the Go Fest: Global 2026 event have access to a free Timed Research quest called "Genetic Mastery," available only on July 11 and 12. This research provides players with a free Mega Mewtwo of their choosing, along with Mega Energy to begin the Mega Evolution process.
The "Genetic Mastery" research spans six steps, starting with basic tasks like spinning PokéStops, catching Pokémon, and making great throws. Subsequent steps involve powering up Pokémon, using TMs, catching diverse species, hatching eggs, and completing Field Research Tasks. A significant choice arises after step three, where players must decide between Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y.
Upon choosing, players receive Mega Energy specifically for their selected form, and the Mewtwo obtained from the research will also have its first Mega Evolution level unlocked. This offers a considerable advantage, as achieving the full Mega Evolution typically requires a substantial amount of Mega Energy, estimated at 7,500 for the initial transformation.
Step four tasks players with catching psychic-type Pokémon and completing Field Research, rewarding them with 300 Mewtwo X/Y Mega Energy, a Mewtwo encounter, and Mewtwo Candy. The research concludes with further tasks involving Mega Evolving Mewtwo, powering up psychic-types, and winning raids, ultimately yielding Stardust, XP, Mewtwo Candy XL, and an Elite Charged TM.
The decision between Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y hinges on several factors, including personal playstyle and available time during Go Fest. Mega Mewtwo X is featured in raids on Saturday, July 11, while Mega Mewtwo Y appears on Sunday, July 12. Players who can only participate on one day might opt for the form not readily available through raids on that specific day, allowing them to gather energy for the other form via raiding.
In terms of combat performance, Mega Mewtwo Y is generally considered slightly stronger, though the difference between the two is minimal. Both are exceptional psychic-type attackers. Their utility extends to other types depending on their Charged Attack: Thunderbolt for Electric, Ice Beam for Ice, Focus Blast for Fighting, and Shadow Ball for Ghost. Mega Mewtwo Y holds an edge in Electric and Ice coverage, while Mega Mewtwo X is superior as a Fighting-type attacker due to its added Fighting typing. However, Mega Lucario remains a more potent Fighting-type attacker overall.
Potential Adventure Effects, though not formally announced by developer Scopely, have been hinted at through datamines. Mega Mewtwo X with Dynamic Punch could allow players to break two shields in Super Mega Raids for 10 minutes. Mega Mewtwo Y with Future Sight might reveal Pokémon with "high stats" before they are caught for five minutes. While these effects could enhance gameplay, their implementation remains uncertain, with players advised to consider their immediate utility and potential future availability.
