The Pokémon World Championships 2026, held at San Francisco's Moscone Center, was marred by significant organizational issues, including extreme overcrowding, lengthy queues, and the cancellation of popular events. These problems led to intervention by the San Francisco Fire Department and widespread attendee dissatisfaction.
Pin Rally Problems Lead to Cancellations
A major attraction for attendees was the Pin Rally, which offered exclusive pins distributed from 12 stations across the venue. However, with an estimated 50,000 attendees and only 8,000 pins available per day, the demand far outstripped supply. On the first day of the event, many pin stations were reportedly closed by late morning due to large crowds. By Saturday, attendees were lining up as early as 6 a.m., with crowds spilling into the streets.
Responding to safety concerns, the San Francisco Fire Department assessed the situation and communicated with event organizers. While rumors suggested the department forced the event's closure, a spokesperson clarified that they discussed suggestions with event organizers, who then decided to shut down the pin giveaway after consulting with local fire officials. The Pin Rally was canceled entirely for Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Social media users expressed significant disappointment with the handling of the Pin Rally, with one attendee calling it the "worst con experience" they had encountered in nearly two decades of attending conventions.
Accessibility and Accommodation Complaints
Beyond the Pin Rally, attendees voiced complaints about general line management and accommodations. One attendee, who uses the handle bugcatcherhay, reported that "ADA at Pokémon Worlds is essentially nonexistent." She described experiencing significant distress, particularly when caught in a crowded line for the Espeon pin, where staff reportedly offered little assistance beyond asking people to move along.
When attempting to join lines for pin stations, staff at times instructed attendees to return later. Upon returning, some found the areas mobbed, with insufficient space for orderly queues, leading to unsafe conditions and pushing. The attendee detailed a personal experience of freezing due to anxiety and stress in a crowded hallway, requiring assistance from a friend to leave the area. When she explained her difficulties to a staff member, highlighting a mental disability, she was informed that no specific accommodations were in place. She felt this lack of preparedness for attendees with disabilities was unacceptable.
Other attendees reported issues such as being denied elevator access and encountering unclear signage for accessible lines, with inconsistent knowledge among staff regarding available accommodations.
The Pokémon Company did not respond to requests for comment regarding these issues.
