Project Zomboid, the long-running early access zombie survival simulator, has achieved a new peak in concurrent players on Steam. This surge follows the release of its substantial build 42.20 update, which overhauls the game's world and introduces new gameplay features.
Map Overhaul and Expansion
The build 42.20 update significantly revises the game's setting of Knox County. Seven of the game's towns have been completely reworked with new art, offering distinct architectural styles, unique buildings and houses, and improved landscaping. The overall map area has been doubled, now encompassing 35,000 tiles. This expansion includes a variety of new and improved locations to explore, such as a boy scout camp, a new prison, and an abandoned orphanage.
In addition to these handcrafted areas, the update introduces a large number of procedural spaces. Players can now discover approximately 400 procedurally generated basements, alongside 75 unique basement designs scattered throughout the world.
Mechanical and Survival Enhancements
Beyond the map changes, build 42 also brings mechanical advancements to Project Zomboid. The update adds new animal types, including cows and chickens, and refines the hunting and trapping systems. These additions aim to create new opportunities for farming and wilderness survival. Other gameplay improvements include an enhanced stealth system, refinements to fishing mechanics, and the ability to drag corpses.
Price Increase and Player Engagement
Coinciding with the release of build 42, The Indie Stone has increased the price of Project Zomboid. The game now costs $25, up from its previous price of $20. Despite this price adjustment, the update has driven a significant increase in player engagement, with nearly 79,552 concurrent players recorded on Steam during the update's early hours.
With build 42 now released, the development team is expected to shift its focus to future updates, including the long-anticipated reintroduction of NPC survivors to Knox County. Development timelines for Project Zomboid's major builds suggest this feature may still be several years away.
