For over two decades, fans of the original Resident Evil 2 have pondered the identity of the man pictured on Jill Valentine's desk within the Raccoon City Police Department. Upon closer inspection in the 1998 release, the in-game text stated, "It's a picture of a young man. There's a good chance it's her boyfriend…" However, the limited fidelity of the era rendered the subject of the photograph indiscernible.

This enduring mystery has finally been put to rest thanks to the diligent efforts of Resident Evil fan Morio. As reported by PC Gamer, Morio identified the figure as actor Kyle MacLachlan, known for his roles in David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" and "Blue Velvet," as well as his recent appearance as the Overseer in the "Fallout" television series.

Morio's findings indicate that the image used was a photograph of MacLachlan sourced from an early 1990s issue of Japan's Roadshow magazine. This publication frequently covered Western media, including "Twin Peaks," and had a particular interest in the series. Morio shared their discovery on X, stating, "Alright, that's it then. The guy from Jill's desk is Kyle MacLachlan. Years of searching finally over."

Interestingly, Morio also uncovered that a similar magazine photograph, this time of Winona Ryder, was used for the image representing Barry Burton's daughter in the game. However, the presence of MacLachlan in Jill's personal effects remains a notable piece of trivia.

The identity of the man in the photograph was not clarified by Capcom at the time of the original game's release. In the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake, the developers opted to replace the photograph on Jill's desk entirely. Instead of a picture of a person, the item was changed to a photograph of a dog, an apparent departure from the original game's subtle nod to a potential romantic interest.
