Director Zach Cregger, known for "Barbarian," is addressing fan concerns regarding his upcoming Resident Evil film, which is set during the Raccoon City outbreak but features notable departures from the established game lore. Cregger has stated that he took creative liberties to tell a specific story and achieve a desired aesthetic for the movie.

Cregger explained at a San Diego Comic Con panel that while the film draws inspiration from the games, it is not a direct one-to-one adaptation of Resident Evil 2. For instance, the movie is set in 2026 and features characters using smartphones, despite Resident Evil 2 taking place in the 1990s. Additionally, the film incorporates snow, a weather element not present in the original game's Raccoon City setting. Cregger defended these choices, stating that the snow was an aesthetic decision that he felt made for a compelling horror setting, and that the modern timeline allowed for the inclusion of contemporary technology.

He acknowledged that these changes might deviate from strict fan expectations. "If the barrier of entry is whether I do a one-for-one port, then I guess, in that regard, I have failed," Cregger said, "But I think the movie is stronger for it."

The film's camera work also consciously mirrors video game aesthetics. Cregger noted that some shots are designed to mimic the intimate, third-person perspective common in Resident Evil games, describing how the camera operator would follow the main character's gaze as if psychically controlled.

Cregger's comments come amidst a broader trend of Hollywood adaptations of video game properties, where skepticism often arises if adaptations are perceived as disrespecting the source material or merely leveraging brand recognition. The director's proactive engagement with these specific criticisms suggests an awareness of the delicate balance between honoring source material and pursuing an independent artistic vision.

Despite the initial concerns, Cregger hopes that the film's overall quality will outweigh any perceived inconsistencies with the game's lore. The movie is scheduled to be released on September 18.
