Riot Games has announced that it will cease active development of its free-to-play League of Legends universe fighting game, 2XKO, in December. The decision comes after the game struggled to attract and retain a sustainable audience since its launch earlier this year. In a blog post, Riot Games stated that while many players initially tried the game and an active community continues to engage with it daily, the numbers have not been sufficient to support ongoing development.

Despite the cessation of active development, 2XKO will not be shut down. Riot Games confirmed that servers will remain active beyond December, allowing players to continue participating in online matches. Before development concludes, the game will receive additional content, including two new champions, Lux and Samira, alongside other feature improvements. A final bug fix patch is slated for release in December. Offline play modes will remain unaffected by these changes.

Riot Games is also implementing several measures to compensate players who have invested time and money into 2XKO. All champions will be unlocked, most cosmetic items will be bundled, and refunds will be issued for all purchases made on or before August 20. Purchases of KO Points have been disabled, and previously bought content will be retained by players. A patch scheduled for September will enable the unlock of avatar and player profile items using credits.

2XKO, originally revealed in 2019 under the codename Project L, evolved from an earlier fighting game concept. It launched in PC early access in September 2025, with a full 1.0 release and console ports following on January 20. Although the game received generally positive reviews, its struggles to gain traction became apparent shortly after its debut, leading to layoffs affecting approximately half of the development team. The competitive landscape, with the release of other tag-team fighting games, may have also contributed to 2XKO's challenges in attracting a wider audience.
