Despite speculation and the recent closure of another project, Riot Games' unannounced MMO is continuing development, according to co-founder Marc Merrill. Speaking at PAX West, Merrill likened the ambitious undertaking to a "grail quest," a challenging but ultimately rewarding pursuit.
Merrill addressed the MMO's status during a panel, where he was pressed for details by host Greg Miller. While offering few concrete updates, Merrill stated, "We know what players' hopes and dreams are. And it's on us as a team—can we exceed in the execution, you know? But what a worthy quest. We jokingly call it 'the grail' internally because we're like 'Fuck it, you know, many a brave knight are going to die on the grail quest. But fuck it, it's the grail, so let's go.' That's the mindset that we really try to cultivate and that is incredibly hard to do at scale. But I think we're doing a reasonable job and I think the future's incredibly bright."
The analogy, while emphasizing the difficulty and dedication required for MMO development, has also drawn comparisons to the company's recent layoffs, though Merrill's overall tone suggests enthusiasm for the project's direction. No information regarding a title, development timeline, or release date was provided.
