Roblox is introducing a significant new initiative, dubbed 'Roblox Everywhere,' that will enable creators to export their games as standalone applications for PC, console, and mobile platforms. This move marks a substantial expansion for the popular gaming platform, allowing its vast library of user-generated content to reach audiences beyond the confines of the Roblox ecosystem.
The Roblox platform has achieved massive popularity, with industry analyst Matthew Ball noting its substantial player engagement and revenue growth surpassing that of Steam, PlayStation, and Fortnite combined. "Soon, creators will have the option to make their games available as standalone apps across mobile, PC, and consoles, with Roblox powering the technology and services underneath," a Roblox representative stated during the Roblox Developers Conference.
Details regarding the availability of these standalone games on major digital storefronts such as Steam and the Epic Games Store are still being finalized. A Roblox spokesperson indicated to PC Gamer that the company's goal is to make these games accessible across all platforms and storefronts, but they are currently exploring options and will begin with a select group of developers and storefronts for testing.
This development opens up new avenues for both individual creators and Roblox itself, providing access to audiences previously unreachable within the platform. While some may perceive Roblox games as limited in scope, titles like the shooter TTK have demonstrated the platform's capability to host more complex experiences beyond simple obstacle courses or idle clickers.
The 'Roblox Everywhere' initiative is complemented by other planned expansions. Roblox also intends to allow players to join games directly through a browser, initially on Chrome, with support for other browsers to follow by the end of the year. Additionally, a new offline mode is planned to support singleplayer games even without an active internet connection.
