Rockstar Games has provided updated guidance regarding regional restrictions for Grand Theft Auto VI download codes purchased at retail, particularly for the PlayStation 5 version. The developer's support page now details which regions have limitations on code redemption and introduces a unique expiry date for physical copies sold in Japan.
For PlayStation 5 users, it is recommended to purchase the game in a country that matches the region of their PlayStation Network account to avoid potential issues. Codes redeemed in a region different from the one intended for purchase may not be valid. This restriction stems from the way PlayStation Network accounts handle regional limitations.
In contrast, download codes for the Xbox version of Grand Theft Auto VI are not region-locked and can be redeemed globally, irrespective of the account's region.
A notable detail for players in Japan concerns physical copies. Download codes included in these editions will expire 170 days after their print date, a measure in place to comply with local regulations. If a code was printed on the game's launch date of November 19, the last day for redemption would be May 8, 2027.
Rockstar has outlined specific regions where code redemption is limited. Codes purchased in the following areas are restricted to redemption within those same regions:
- Brazil: Brazil
- LATAM: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay
- North America: Canada, United States
- Korea: South Korea
- Japan: Japan
- United Kingdom: United Kingdom
- Saudi Arabia & UAE: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
- Rest of Asia: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand
Codes purchased in the 'Rest of EMEA and Asia' region can be redeemed in a broader set of countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine.
While retail pre-orders have raised questions about regional compatibility, Grand Theft Auto VI has continued to perform strongly on digital storefronts. The game has topped pre-order charts across numerous PlayStation Store regions, a trend likely influenced by Rockstar's decision to release retail copies without a physical disc. This move may have encouraged many consumers to opt for digital purchases to enable pre-loading. Pre-order sales data for Grand Theft Auto VI are reportedly robust, despite speculation regarding the game's immediate financial performance and potential future releases of physical disc editions.
