Rockstar Games deployed developers to Miami for extensive, long-term research as part of the creation of Grand Theft Auto 6, reportedly embedding a dedicated team within the city. This initiative involved engaging with a wide range of individuals, including ex-criminals, law enforcement officers, club promoters, and gun dealers, as well as other notable and influential figures.

According to reports, multiple groups of Rockstar employees visited Miami and its surrounding areas over the past decade. A senior vice president of narrative at Rockstar, Rupert Humphries, stated that these developers would "hang out, get a feeling for the place, listen to the stories, cross-reference that with books and journalism, and try to get to the heart of which characters will bring the city we are creating to life." This approach aimed to foster a genuine appreciation and deep curiosity for the real cultures involved, moving beyond superficial clichés.

The research extended to capturing the nuances of the Miami music scene, particularly Miami bass, and understanding the diverse settings of its hip-hop culture, from intimate house parties in Overtown to exclusive clubs on South Beach. The studio also collaborated with Miami-based stylist Jillian Carr since 2023 to design an in-game fashion ecosystem that reflects the taste, lifestyle, and affluence of the region.

Rockstar's commitment to immersion is also evident in the game's non-player characters (NPCs), who are designed to react more directly to the player. The developers sought to create a varied population, with NPCs differing in appearance, attire, and background, tailored to their specific in-game environments, from Vice City's Little Cuba to the wilderness of Mount Kalaga. The development team for Grand Theft Auto 6 has more than doubled in size since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, and over 50 real street artists were involved in designing murals for Vice City's Stockyard district, an area based on Miami's Wynwood.

This extensive research and development effort contributes to the game's anticipated sense of realism and depth. The game is set to launch on November 19th.
