Rockstar Games has stated that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch in November 2026 without microtransactions or the use of generative artificial intelligence. The confirmation came during a discussion with Kinda Funny Games earlier this week, where studio representatives addressed what could be significant points of player contention.
During a preview event preceding the GTA 6: Extended Look gameplay trailer, Kinda Funny's Andy Cortez inquired about the possibility of players purchasing in-game items with real-world money. The response from Rockstar was definitive: "no monetizations in this game." This statement was followed by Kinda Funny's Greg Miller directly asking Rockstar about the inclusion of generative AI. The team confirmed that "no AI" would be used in the game's development or functionality at launch.
The potential for generative AI to complicate game development has been a recurring issue for studios, as seen in titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Arc Raiders. For Grand Theft Auto VI, which is the first new entry in the franchise in over a decade, avoiding these controversial elements at launch aims to preempt potential backlash.
While traditional microtransactions are reportedly absent, the game will feature different editions. The Ultimate Edition, priced at $99.99, offers exclusive content such as cosmetic packs, vehicles, weapons, and access to specific in-game shops like the Electric Fang tattoo parlor and Stock 305 clothing store. Rockstar has clarified that standard edition owners will have the option to purchase an upgrade for this content separately. These bonuses are described as being integrated throughout the narrative, with new items becoming available as players progress through Jason and Lucia's story.
Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar has indicated that further details will be shared leading up to the launch date.
