Rockstar Games plans to steer clear of direct satire concerning Donald Trump's political career and the COVID-19 pandemic in its highly anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto 6. The studio aims to create a game with lasting comedic relevance, rather than risking references that could quickly become dated.

Studio head Rob Nelson of Rockstar North elaborated on this approach in recent previews, including discussions with The New York Times and IGN. He stated that the long development cycles for Grand Theft Auto games necessitate a careful selection of satirical targets. The goal is to focus on "timeless quality" that speaks to "relatable sort of human folly and foibles" rather than immediate cultural or political moments.

"We run the risk of dating ourselves in a sort of awkward way," Nelson told The New York Times. "So we have to look at things and go, What is going to have a timeless sort of quality that will speak very easily to relatable sort of human folly and foibles and will be remembered as part of this time?"

Nelson further explained to IGN that while specific political issues or memes can date quickly, broader themes might still be addressed. This suggests that while direct parodies of Trump or the pandemic are unlikely, the game might still touch upon adjacent cultural phenomena, such as the rise of conspiracy theories.

Previous Grand Theft Auto titles have been known for their sharp and often provocative satire of contemporary society. However, the approach for Grand Theft Auto 6 appears to prioritize longevity in its comedic commentary. Even contemporary slang is being avoided to ensure the game does not feel anachronistic upon release.

Despite this, earlier trailers for Grand Theft Auto 6 have incorporated references to popular internet culture, including what appeared to be a nod to the "Florida Joker" and viral TikTok clips. These instances suggest a nuanced balance between timeless themes and acknowledgments of current online trends.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
