Developer Jagex has reversed a controversial decision to sell single-use cosmetic items for player-owned housing in RuneScape following significant community backlash. The company announced on August 4 that it would offer refunds for recently purchased cosmetic bundles and revise its approach to player-owned housing decorations.
Initially, Jagex introduced new paid cosmetic bundles for player housing on August 3, including a $12 pack containing balloons and other anniversary-themed decorations. These items, however, were designed as finite furniture pieces rather than unlockable crafting recipes. Players expressed frustration that they would need to purchase multiple packs to adequately decorate their in-game homes, leading to concerns about storage space and the value proposition of the items.
Players desired the ability to craft these decorations themselves using blueprints, a common practice for cosmetic items in many games, including RuneScape. The sentiment on platforms like Reddit was that selling limited-use furniture items was a misstep by the developer.
Jagex lead community manager Anvil acknowledged the community's feedback, stating that the company agreed there was a better way to offer these items. Moving forward, all cosmetic bundles for housing will include blueprints, allowing players to craft an unlimited number of items once unlocked. Jagex will also ensure that players who bought multiple packs will receive refunds and that future offerings will follow a "buy once, unlock forever" model.
While many players are pleased with Jagex's swift response, some criticized that it took widespread community outcry to prompt the change. Regardless, the adjustment means players will no longer be forced to repeatedly purchase decorations to personalize their RuneScape homes.
