Joe and Anthony Russo, the directorial duo behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers: Endgame, have extended their congratulations to the cast and crew of Spider-Man: Brand New Day for surpassing their film's record for the largest domestic opening weekend in box office history. The brothers shared a graphic created by Bosslogic, depicting Spider-Man in a triumphant pose with Infinity Stones incorporated into his accessories, accompanied by the declaration, "The gauntlet has been passed."

This acknowledgment comes as Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved significant box office success, crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide in under a week. The film also secured the second-biggest international opening of all time. It is slated for an IMAX release domestically on Friday, August 7.

While the success is celebrated, some industry commentary suggests a potential shift in the MCU's landscape. IGN writer Alex Zalben posited in an op-ed that the film's performance may signal the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it was known, with future releases potentially focusing more narrowly on specific franchises like Spider-Man and Avengers.

In a review of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, IGN's Tom Jorgensen awarded the film a 7/10, highlighting its effective return to core Spider-Man themes: the hero's internal struggles, his heroic actions throughout New York City, and his signature style.

The Russo Brothers are expected to contend for the opening weekend record again with their upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December. Meanwhile, The Odyssey will continue its 70mm IMAX run through September 16.
