Facepunch Studios has rolled out the Common Ground update for its survival game Rust, introducing a new system for players to rent apartments and establish shops within the game world. This update aims to add a layer of realistic economic simulation and social interaction.

The update features an apartment complex where players can secure one of three tiers of living space, from basic starter flats to more luxurious penthouses. Each residence comes with amenities such as a stove, bed, and workbench, with higher-tier apartments offering more advanced furnishings. To maintain ownership, players must deposit a specified amount of scrap into an intercom system located outside their door every 24 hours. Failure to meet this daily rent requirement results in eviction and the confiscation of all possessions.

Player security within these apartments is not absolute, even with timely rent payments. A master key to the complex can be found on the island, allowing other players to acquire information about valuable rooms from a security guard and potentially burgle them. Occupants can defend their property, necessitating the presence of weapons or other defensive measures.

Beyond residential spaces, the Common Ground update allows players to rent shop stalls in the complex's market. Setting up a shop requires a non-refundable upfront scrap fee, in addition to an ongoing per-hour scrap cost. Prospective shopkeepers must have enough scrap to cover at least 12 hours of rent before they can begin selling goods. Once operational, players can create item listings and customize their shop's sign.

The rental market is further complicated by a mechanic allowing other players to take over an existing shop. After a shop has been open for six hours, another player can assume control by paying double the upfront scrap cost and the hourly rent. This multiplier escalates with subsequent takeovers, resetting only when a shopkeeper fails to pay rent, leading to the shop and its cost multiplier resetting.

Burglars with the master key can also steal from shops, adding another layer of risk for business owners. The Common Ground update also introduces a new clan system, increased resource gathering rates, and limits raids to a specific six-hour window between 6 PM and 9 PM in Softcore mode.
