The Amazon Prime Video adaptation of God of War has encountered a significant production hurdle, with lead actor Ryan Hurst being replaced as Kratos due to a serious on-set injury. Hurst suffered a bicep tear while filming a stunt in late June, necessitating a pause in production. He has since undergone surgery and is in recovery.
A recovery from a severe bicep tear can extend from six months to a full year for the return to complete strength, posing a considerable challenge for the physically demanding role of Kratos. Continuing production with Hurst's recovery timeline would have meant a lengthy delay, potentially pushing into 2027.
Sony and Amazon have opted to recast the role with the goal of resuming production in October. The four episodes that had already been completed will likely require substantial reshoots. While a new actor has not yet been identified, the decision signals a shift in the show's immediate future.
Hurst was announced as Kratos in January and had been filming the part in Vancouver for several months prior to the incident. He is known for his roles in "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Walking Dead." Gamers will recognize him as the voice of Thor in the 2022 title, "God of War Ragnarök."
