Ryan Reynolds' latest film, the action-comedy thriller Mayday, has rapidly ascended to the top of Apple TV+'s streaming charts, securing the number one position in 100 countries.
The film, directed by the creative team behind Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, premiered on Apple TV+ last week. It features Reynolds as Lieutenant Troy "Assassin" Kelly, a U.S. Navy pilot on a covert Cold War mission into Soviet territory. The plot thickens when Troy crash-lands behind enemy lines and must rely on an unexpected ally: Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent portrayed by Kenneth Branagh.
What begins as a perilous mission evolves into an unlikely buddy adventure as Reynolds' and Branagh's characters work together to escape Soviet territory. The ensemble cast also includes Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, and David Morse.
Early critical reception for Mayday has been generally positive, with Rotten Tomatoes scores in the low 80s. Reviewers have frequently highlighted the chemistry between Reynolds and Branagh, as well as the film's energetic action-comedy approach. While some critics found the script and Reynolds' signature wisecracking persona to be familiar, many have noted Branagh's enthusiastic performance.
Mayday is now available for streaming on Apple TV+.
