A chilling point-and-click horror game from 1998, Sanitarium, is set to receive a significant update and re-release in 2026. Titled Sanitarium Enhanced, this new version promises to bring the beloved, albeit disturbing, adventure to modern audiences with a range of improvements.
Sanitarium originally launched in 1998, a year notable for landmark PC titles like Half-Life and StarCraft, and console hits such as Metal Gear Solid and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The isometric adventure game casts players as Max, an amnesiac who awakens within the confines of a dilapidated asylum, with no memory of his identity or circumstances. The game is known for its unique ability to blend campy elements with genuinely gruelling psychological horror, set against a backdrop of vividly rendered and varied isometric environments.
The upcoming Sanitarium Enhanced, published by Ziggurat, will feature several quality-of-life enhancements. These include widescreen support that extends to gameplay, not just cutscenes, and full controller compatibility. An extras gallery will also be included, featuring behind-the-scenes content and cut material from the original development.
Crucially for players who may find traditional point-and-click mechanics daunting, a new optional hint mode has been incorporated. This feature is designed to assist modern players who might otherwise struggle with the pixel-hunting or systematic clicking often required in '90s adventure games. The developers have also stated that a range of unspecified legacy bugs and issues have been addressed in this enhanced version.
While the existing Steam version of Sanitarium functions adequately on platforms like the Steam Deck, Sanitarium Enhanced is being optimized for the handheld. Beyond PC, the game is slated for release on Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles at an unspecified date later in 2026. This multi-platform launch aims to make the game accessible to a wider audience, allowing more players to experience its unsettling narrative and distinctive atmosphere.
