Sil-Q, a free and open-source game, offers a unique take on the roguelike genre by transposing its gameplay into J.R.R. Tolkien's First Age of Arda, the setting for much of The Silmarillion. While its initial release was in 2017, its development lineage traces back much further, stemming from Sil (2012), which in turn is based on Angband (1993), itself a derivative of Moria (1983). Both Angband and Moria remain under active development.

The game's predecessor, Angband, was a sprawling fantasy title with a Tolkienian underpinning, where the ultimate goal was to defeat Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. However, this premise conflicted with Tolkien's lore, as Morgoth was never slain but merely banished. Sil-Q, along with its direct ancestor Sil, refines Angband's core roguelike mechanics while adhering more closely to the established setting.

This commitment to lore is evident in Sil-Q's character options. Players can choose to play as the Noldor (high elves), Sindar (other elves), Naugrim (dwarves), or Edain (men). These are not distinct classes in the traditional sense, offering different mechanical advantages. Instead, they reflect Arda's narrative, where mortal men, despite their favored status by Eru Ilúvatar, possess fewer inherent strengths compared to elves and dwarves. Playing as a man, therefore, is a deliberate challenge.

Character creation.

After selecting a race, players choose a lineage which influences starting proficiencies and statistics. The objective within Morgoth's fortress is not to assassinate the Dark Lord, but to retrieve one of the stolen Silmaril gems from his crown and escape. This approach prioritizes narrative fidelity, aligning gameplay mechanics with the established world.

Exploring a large dungeon.

Gameplay involves navigating Morgoth's fortress, engaging in combat with orcs, and acquiring mythical artifacts, all within the classic roguelike framework of repeated attempts and eventual failure. The experience aims to evoke the heroic deeds of the First Age, though the player's demise can occur through less glorious means, such as an encounter with wolves early in the game.

Sil-Q is notable for its dedication to its source material, where the integrity of the world and its lore takes precedence over conventional game balancing. This focus on setting, even at the expense of player advantage, is a defining characteristic of the game. It is a title that runs on modest hardware and boasts a rich history spanning over four decades of development and millennia of in-world lore.
