Season 3 of Apple TV+'s "Silo" is exploring the profound effects of memory loss on protagonist Juliette Nichols, played by Rebecca Ferguson. The new season's premiere revealed that Juliette has been kept subdued since her return from Silo 17 by head of IT Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley), who has been administering memory-erasing drugs. These drugs have rendered Juliette unable to recognize close friends, transforming her into a figurehead mayor controlled by her former adversaries.
Ferguson shared with Polygon that despite the memory suppression, Juliette's fundamental character remains intact. "When you’ve lived in a character for so long, the character is so sedimented,” Ferguson said. “There’s a DNA to her. It’s the way she walks. It’s the way she handles people.” She highlighted Juliette's growth from a socially awkward engineer, noting her development through new alliances, particularly her experience in Silo 17 with the character Solo (Steve Zahn).
"Taking away all this memory, there’s still all the rooted character creation that we have done,” Ferguson added, emphasizing the lasting impact of the character's established traits. The season's narrative is built around uncovering these suppressed memories. Showrunner Graham Yost confirmed that two writers were dedicated to mapping Juliette's key memories and how they might resurface. The premiere episode, "Who Are You?", showed Juliette recalling fragments of conversations with former head of IT Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) outside the Silo, hinting at an important task she needs to undertake.
An exclusive clip from the upcoming episode, "It’s All Good," scheduled for July 10, offers a deeper look into Juliette's controlled state and her potential path to recovery. The preview features Juliette reuniting with allies like smuggler Patrick Kennedy (Rick Gomez), hacker Danny (Will Merrick), and clerk Sandy (Chipo Chung), who are seeking answers about her time outside the Silo. The stakes are high for Silo 18, as Juliette's suppressed memories may be hiding a critical warning from Solo about a poison that threatens the entire population. The temporary peace achieved through memory suppression is presented as an unsustainable solution to the Silo's ongoing crisis.
