Jarett Gross, the solo developer behind Beaten Path, has revealed more details about the upcoming tactical RPG. Inspired by classics such as Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics, the game is set in a world populated by ancient machines and fallen gods and will feature 25 fully voice-acted characters.
Beaten Path was successfully funded on Kickstarter in just six days. Gross stated his intention was to create a tactical RPG with meaningful strategy, extensive customization options, and a world that players can explore beyond its combat encounters. Development has been ongoing for nearly five years, expanding the scope of Gross's initial vision. The developer has partnered with Wales Interactive to bring the game to a wider audience on PC and consoles.
The core gameplay revolves around turn-based, grid-based combat where player positioning, elevation, and flanking maneuvers are critical. The game includes mechanics like Sync attacks, achieved through successful flanking, and a Break system that targets enemy weaknesses. Beaten Path boasts over 25 recruitable characters, ten times the number of abilities compared to its inspirations, ten distinct weapon classes, and a dual-job system that allows for significant character customization. Party building is emphasized as a central element of the experience.
Players will journey across continents, utilizing ships and horses, uncovering secrets, and returning to a central hub called The Haven. This hub serves as a place for allies to gather, where character conversations can evolve and shops provide opportunities to enhance the party's strength.
Beaten Path is slated for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Interested players can wishlist the game on Steam.
