Sony has stated that it has secured sufficient RAM to meet its projected PlayStation 5 sales volumes through fiscal year 2026, aiming to quell concerns about console availability ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI in November. The company's assurance comes amid broader industry challenges driven by an AI-fueled supply crunch affecting memory and storage prices.

In its latest earnings report, Sony indicated that it has procured the necessary memory quantities for its anticipated sales figures for FY26, maintaining its plan for hardware profitability to remain consistent with FY25. While this suggests no immediate PS5 price hikes are planned for the latter half of the current year, future pricing beyond FY26 remains uncertain given the evolving economic landscape for gaming hardware.

The company has revised its revenue projections upward by 3 percent and operating income by 10 percent, signaling confidence in its financial outlook despite a recent dip in PS5 hardware sales. Last quarter, Sony sold 1.38 million PS5 units, a decrease from 1.56 million in the same period last year. This decline occurred after a $100 price increase for the base PS5 model in March.

While third-party game sales saw year-over-year growth, first-party sales experienced a significant drop of 900,000 units. Sony has yet to release detailed sales figures for titles such as Housemarque's recent sci-fi shooter or update numbers for last year's Ghost of Yotei. The total number of monthly active PlayStation users reached 125 million, an increase of 2 million from the previous year.

Despite an announcement that physical game discs will be phased out by 2028, the ratio of digital to physical game sales saw a slight decrease of 1 percent last quarter. The cumulative lifetime sales for the PS5 console now stand at 95.3 million units. This figure continues to trail the PlayStation 4's sales over an equivalent period, though the gap is narrowing considering the impact of sustained price increases, initially due to tariffs and more recently influenced by memory market conditions.
