Sony has begun placing advisory stickers on PlayStation 5 consoles, informing consumers that physical game production will be discontinued starting in January 2028. This move has reignited discussions within the gaming community regarding the industry's shift towards digital-only distribution.
A sticker observed on a PS5 box and shared on social media on August 5 states: "Important Notice: From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console." The warning appears on both digital and disc editions of the console, with one user reporting receiving a similar message when purchasing a disc drive for their Digital PlayStation 5.
These warnings are not being met with universal approval from players. Comments on forums like ResetEra and platforms such as X and BlueSky express disappointment and a lack of expectation for a reversal of Sony's decision. Many players feel the company has definitively planned its transition to an all-digital future.
Further reinforcing Sony's commitment to this direction, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao stated in a late July investor Q&A that the company has thoroughly considered its move toward an all-digital future. She indicated that Sony is exploring ways to "engage the gamers" within this evolving digital ecosystem.
In contrast, Xbox is reportedly developing methods for players to digitize their physical game libraries in anticipation of its next console, Project Helix, though the inclusion of a disc drive remains uncertain.
