Sony is reportedly preparing to close the digital storefronts for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles next year. According to a Game File report, the PS3 store will cease operations in July 2027 for most regions, with specific Latin American countries and the Middle East to follow in late 2026. The PlayStation Vita store will be shut down globally in July 2027.
This decision marks the end of an era for players who hold a significant place for these consoles. Sony stated that the storefronts "are no longer able" to support modern commerce systems, and that the closure was a difficult choice given the consoles' important place in PlayStation history. The company plans to reallocate resources to focus on newer platforms where the majority of users are currently playing.
Despite the store closures, Sony has assured players that any digital games previously purchased on either system will remain downloadable "for the foreseeable future." However, with the closure of these digital marketplaces, many games that were released exclusively on the PS3 and Vita, or never received physical releases, will become permanently inaccessible. The PlayStation 5 does not offer native backward compatibility with either console's game library, meaning these digital titles will not be playable on current-generation hardware.
This is not the first time Sony has attempted to close these stores. In 2021, a similar plan faced significant backlash from fans, leading Sony to keep the stores online. However, in the years since, upkeep and maintenance have dwindled, making the storefronts increasingly difficult to use. For instance, the stores stopped supporting direct credit card payments and PayPal, requiring users to purchase physical gift cards for in-store credit to make any digital purchases.
