Squadron 42, the single-player component of the ambitious Star Citizen project, has been delayed once again, now targeting a Q2 2027 release. This marks a significant postponement for a game that was originally slated for a 2015 launch.
Game director Chris Roberts explained the decision in a post on the RSI website, stating that the revised schedule is intended to steer clear of the immense media focus expected around the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. "At CitizenCon 2024 we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE," Roberts said. "But much like the rest of the industry there is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander, a game that has had twelve years of blood, sweat and tears invested into it... launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6."
Roberts elaborated that while Grand Theft Auto 6 is not launching on PC in November, the overwhelming attention from outlets and content creators will leave little room for other game coverage. The development team has therefore opted for a Q2 2027 release window. "We have taken a look at the release windows at the start of 2027, and decided that Q2 provides a better time for Squadron 42 to release."
This latest delay suggests that Cloud Imperium Games may require additional development time. Roberts acknowledged the potential disappointment among players but emphasized the need for the project to receive its due focus. "I know a lot of you will be disappointed to not be playing Squadron 42 at the end of this year, but it is the best thing for the project as it is truly something special and so needs to the opportunity to have the focus of the wider gaming world."
Squadron 42 has experienced numerous delays since its initial announcement, and the prolonged development cycle has been a point of discussion within the community. The recent Star Citizen livestream also faced criticism, which may further underscore the need for refinement before Squadron 42's eventual launch.
