Square Enix has sparked fan anger with the announcement of a Nintendo Switch 2 port for Star Ocean: The Second Story R, following a similar controversy earlier this week involving Octopath Traveler.
Fans are dismayed that the new version, priced at $49.99, offers no free or paid upgrade path for those who already own the game on the original Nintendo Switch, nor does it support save file transfers. The announcement, made via trailers on social media and YouTube, was met with widespread criticism. Comments on the YouTube trailer frequently express disappointment, with top remarks demanding an "UPGRADE PATH!!!" or stating "No upgrade path, no purchase."
Adding to player frustration, the Switch 2 edition of Star Ocean: The Second Story R is exclusively available as a digital download. This decision comes at a time when physical media is a growing concern among gamers, particularly with the perceived insecurity of digital ownership. Many fans feel that physical releases provide a greater sense of permanence for their game collection, and Square Enix's choice to omit a physical option for the Switch 2 port further alienates loyal customers who would have preferred a small upgrade fee for a physical version.
The timing of this announcement is also notable, preceding a Star Ocean 30th anniversary live stream scheduled for July 19. Square Enix has indicated the stream will focus on the series' history and development rather than new game announcements.
In a move that has further compounded fan dissatisfaction, Square Enix is currently offering the original Nintendo Switch version of Star Ocean: The Second Story R at a discounted price of $24.99 as part of anniversary celebrations. The sale is set to end on July 17, just before the anniversary event.
Star Ocean: The Second Story R is now available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC.
