Dungeons & Dragons is set to embrace the Force with a major crossover event planned for 2027. Wizards of the Coast revealed the upcoming collaboration during the D&D Vision Keynote presentation at Gen Con 2026.
The announcement confirms Star Wars as the next property to join D&D's Universes Beyond initiative, a strategy that has previously brought properties like World of Warcraft into the fantasy role-playing game. While the World of Warcraft crossover was seen as a natural fit due to similar aesthetics and lore, the addition of Star Wars signals a broader scope for the Universes Beyond line.
This venture marks not the first time D&D has explored science fiction. The 1980 adventure module Expedition to the Barrier Peaks featured elements like robots and laser guns, and the Spelljammer setting from 1989 offered space-based adventures. Wizards of the Coast also previously published a Star Wars Roleplaying Game in the early 2000s before the license expired in 2010.
Specific details regarding the Star Wars D&D crossover remain scarce. However, based on previews of the World of Warcraft book, it is expected that the product will provide players and Dungeon Masters with the necessary tools to set campaigns within George Lucas's galaxy. A notable aspect of this crossover will be the adaptation of the Force into D&D 5.5e's ruleset, potentially drawing from or influencing psionics rules planned for the Dark Sun campaign setting.
The integration of Star Wars into D&D also fuels speculation about a potential crossover with Magic: The Gathering. Both D&D and Magic are published by Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro. Given the success of the Universes Beyond strategy for the trading card game, and Hasbro's existing deal for Star Wars in D&D, a Magic: The Gathering presence for Star Wars is a possibility. However, Star Wars is currently promoting its own trading card game, Star Unlimited, which could affect the scope of any Hasbro-Wizards deal. Recent reports of misprinted Magic: The Gathering cards featuring an X-Wing set symbol have further fueled these rumors among players.
