Lucasfilm continues to explore the Star Wars timeline's narrative gaps with new novels and comics focusing on characters like Kylo Ren, Poe Dameron, Rey, and Finn. Madeleine Roux's "Star Wars: Legacy" is one such addition, aiming to provide a deeper exploration of the relationship between Rey and Leia Organa, a master and apprentice duo whose potential was not fully realized in "The Rise of Skywalker."
The novel is set in the period between "The Last Jedi" and "The Rise of Skywalker," following Rey as she seeks answers on how to repair her lightsaber after the loss of her master, Luke Skywalker. Her research leads her to the planet Tython, where she is unexpectedly joined by Leia Organa, the leader of the Resistance.
Roux stated that the book was written for fans who connect with Leia and Rey. She described the novel as a bridge between films, offering a "deep interrogation of (and retrospective on) a beautiful and complex relationship." The narrative follows Rey and Leia as they attempt to fix Rey's lightsaber on Tython. They are joined by Gavrin, a skeptical member of the Church of the Force.
An excerpt from the novel details a pivotal scene within an abandoned temple on Tython. Rey, struggling with the ritual to repair her lightsaber, experiences visions of her past, including encounters with Kylo Ren, destruction, and death. Leia offers comfort and reassurance, drawing parallels to her own past experiences.
Rey and Leia discover a hidden path across a cistern, revealed by the water droplets from Rey's cowl. This path, constructed of nearly invisible transparisteel, was an ancient Jedi test designed to remain hidden by darkness and airflow. Rey activates her glow rod to illuminate the way, and they cautiously cross, with C-3PO expressing his trepidation.
Upon reaching the other side, they find a door that Rey opens using the Force, similar to mechanisms encountered earlier. The door triggers a holographic message from a Jedi Master, who speaks of the "Way of the Reforged" and the "Simulacris," emphasizing the importance of balance between focus, determination, and restraint. The message compares the process to a goldsmith refining metal, suggesting a trial that requires inward reflection.
Rey expresses her desire to find a forge, interpreting the Jedi Master's words literally, while Gavrin suggests it might be a metaphor. Leia, sensing Rey's distress and the potential danger, proposes they investigate further after drying off and consulting Rey's books. The excerpt concludes with Leia offering Gavrin assistance and suggesting they share tea, reinforcing the bond between the characters and signaling a temporary pause in their quest.
"Star Wars: Legacy" by Madeleine Roux is scheduled for release on July 28.
