Blizzard has confirmed that the StarCraft franchise will make its return in 2030 with a new entry simply titled StarCraft. This upcoming title represents a significant departure from the series' real-time strategy roots, shifting to an open-world shooter format. The announcement was made during the opening ceremony at BlizzCon 2026.

While specific gameplay details remain scarce, the cinematic reveal trailer showcased a soldier preparing for deployment on an alien world. The trailer emphasized the brutal nature of the universe, with the soldier quickly falling to enemies after running out of ammunition, hinting at the challenging combat players can expect.

This marks Blizzard's first foray into developing an open-world shooter. The studio has not yet clarified whether the game will feature a first-person or third-person perspective. Further details are expected to be revealed closer to the game's release.

Teasers for the new StarCraft game began appearing earlier this month, with hidden messages in the franchise's official website code suggesting the game would be set approximately 70 years after the events of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void. The original StarCraft debuted in March 1998, followed by its expansion Brood War in December. StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty launched 12 years later, with expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void arriving in 2013 and 2015, respectively. The franchise has been largely quiet since StarCraft: Remastered in 2017, with previous attempts at new installments including the third-person shooter StarCraft: Ghost and a project codenamed "Ares."

The original StarCraft series garnered significant popularity, particularly in Asia, and was instrumental in establishing Blizzard's reputation prior to the success of World of Warcraft. The franchise has not seen a release of this magnitude since the Nova Covert Ops DLC in 2016. The dramatic shift from its established real-time strategy genre to an open-world shooter is anticipated to spark considerable discussion among fans upon its 2030 launch.
