Despite the StarCraft reveal trailer prominently featuring the Terran faction and their confrontation with the Zerg, the Protoss, a cornerstone of the franchise, will indeed be present as an enemy force. GameSpot spoke with General Manager and Creative Director Dan Hay at BlizzCon, who, while remaining coy about specific details, confirmed their inclusion.
Hay elaborated on the distinct flavors of each faction, describing the Protoss as "older, and there's a mystique and a grandness to them." The Zerg, in contrast, are characterized as "numberless" and capable of overwhelming opponents with "sheer organic power." The Terrans, he explained, are depicted as a group working through the sector in a "haphazard and industrial way." The development team aims to ensure "not all just be one taste," creating moments where players will face organic threats and others where they will encounter "this wonderful legacy and that are ancient."
Hay pointed out a subtle, easily missed hint of the Protoss within the trailer. "You saw more than the Zerg in the trailer," he stated. "If you look a little deeper, there's a moment when the thing opens and you hear that great horn go off. If you look in the background—just in the background, adjust the lighting just a tiny bit—you'll see some architecture that is very not Terran and very not Zerg. It's there."
Furthermore, Hay confirmed that StarCraft will adopt a third-person perspective. While the trailer may not directly represent gameplay, it offers a glimpse into how this perspective could alter the player's experience. The trailer shows a Terran soldier looking up in fear at the massive scale of a Zerg Overlord, an event typically viewed from an isometric camera in previous StarCraft titles.
The game is planned to have a "single-player focus," and Hay offered insight into the timing of its announcement, despite its projected 2030 release, suggesting it was the right moment to share the vision for the game.
