Steve Buscemi has been cast in the upcoming anthology television series based on Ubisoft's Far Cry video game franchise, FX announced Tuesday. Buscemi joins previously announced cast members Rob Mac and Lizzy Caplan.
The role Buscemi will play in the series remains undisclosed. The veteran actor brings a wealth of experience to the project, with a career spanning 40 years and notable roles in films such as Fargo, Reservoir Dogs, and The Big Lebowski, as well as television appearances in The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and 30 Rock. He most recently appeared in the Netflix series Wednesday.
The Far Cry series is being developed by executive producer Noah Hawley, known for his work on Fargo and Alien: Earth. FX has stated that the limited series will adopt Far Cry's signature anthology format, with each season featuring a new setting and cast of characters. This structure mirrors Hawley's approach to Fargo, which explores variations on a theme each season.
The series will be available on FX and Hulu in the United States, and on Disney Plus internationally. FX initially announced the Far Cry television series in November 2025, but a release date has not yet been confirmed.
Rob Mac expressed excitement about collaborating with Hawley, stating that Ubisoft has been very supportive in entrusting them with the Far Cry intellectual property. Hawley further elaborated on his vision for the show, describing it as a chance to create a large-scale action series that can evolve annually while examining human nature through a complex and chaotic lens.
The Far Cry game franchise is known for its blend of violence, madness, and politically charged narratives. The most recent installment, Far Cry 6, was released in 2021 and featured Giancarlo Esposito as the antagonist Antón. The franchise often embraces dark themes and complex characters, a tone that the television series aims to capture.
