Following years of blocky, interactive figures, Nintendo and The Lego Group have confirmed that traditional Super Mario minifigures will debut in 2027. This announcement follows a March tease that showed Mario in a classic minifigure form, though with a distinct headpiece.
The existing Lego Super Mario line features figures modeled after interactive toys, characterized by a squat, stacked design. These interactive figures are distinct from the standard Lego minifigure aesthetic. The companies have also produced larger, brick-built characters and vehicles, including a Mario figure with a Kart, and pixel-art recreations.
The upcoming minifigures are expected to introduce new possibilities for the Lego Super Mario universe. Leaks suggest that Luigi, a larger Bowser "BigFig," and a Yoshi figure that can accommodate another minifigure on its back may join Mario. Previous Lego releases have included brick-based iterations of characters like Wario, Captain Toad, Bowser Jr., and Boo, alongside numerous classic Super Mario enemies.
While Lego has previously produced minifigures for other Nintendo franchises, such as Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda, this marks uncharted territory for Mario and his companions in the classic minifigure format. The collaboration between Nintendo and Lego has seen significant expansion, with 2026 slated to feature a Lego Donkey Kong arcade machine set, a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Final Battle set, and Lego Mario Kart sets including Luigi and a Mach 8 vehicle. Additionally, 2026 has been a substantial year for Lego Pokémon, with over 20 sets released.
