Supermassive Games has initiated another round of layoffs, with up to 75 employees facing redundancy. This development comes just three months after the release of the studio's latest title, Directive 8020. In a statement shared on X, the company described the action as a "necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company."

This marks the third instance of significant staff reductions at Supermassive Games within a three-year period. Previous layoffs in 2024 and 2025 also cited the challenging conditions within the video game industry as the primary driver for such measures.

The broader gaming industry is currently experiencing considerable upheaval, with thousands of developers being let go annually, often irrespective of individual project success. Veteran developer Brenda Romero has characterized the current climate as even more volatile than the industry crash of the 1980s.

Despite these widespread cuts, the financial context of the industry remains a point of discussion. Major companies frequently report billions in profits, with executive compensation in the millions. While Supermassive Games operates as a division of Nordisk Film, itself owned by Egmont Group, the latter reported an operating profit of €140 million (approximately $162 million) on revenues of €2.2 billion (approximately $2.5 billion) in 2025. The exact number of employees remaining at Supermassive following this latest round of redundancies has not been disclosed.
