Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch later this year with a standard price of $80, and a premium edition costing $100. This pricing decision has drawn attention, especially when compared to other AAA titles from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' parent company, such as NBA 2K27, which is priced at $70. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed this discrepancy during the company's Q1 FY27 earnings call, emphasizing that their goal is not to maximize price but to deliver exceptional value to consumers.

Zelnick explained that the real cost of producing AAA video games has decreased significantly over the past two decades, while pricing has not kept pace with inflation. He believes that the consumer's perception of value is a combination of the experience itself and its cost. "Our goal is to continue to overdeliver to consumers, because how you feel about any experience is the intersection of the experience itself and what you paid for it," Zelnick stated.

Regarding Grand Theft Auto 6 specifically, Zelnick indicated that the game's immense anticipation and Rockstar's reputation for quality justify its $80 price point. He suggested that the company could have set an even higher price given the hype surrounding the title. "To say that we expect that GTA 6 will be an incredible bargain as far as experiences go is a gross understatement," he commented, adding that Rockstar Games is known for overdelivering. "Our goal is not to maximize price. So in this case, what we have decided to do makes a whole lot of sense."

The pricing strategy appears to be resonating with players, as Take-Two reported exceptional pre-order numbers for Grand Theft Auto 6. Zelnick noted during the call that these pre-orders are unprecedented for the company. "Our pre-orders are exceptional. No one has ever seen anything like this before at Take-Two," he said, though he cautioned that the exact translation of these numbers into sales remains unknown. Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox, with a digital-only launch.
