The Incident at Galley House, the new detective game from developer Evil Trout, has experienced a highly successful launch on Steam, achieving an 'overwhelmingly positive' rating from over 600 reviews within its first two days. This title marks a collaboration between Evil Trout, designer Jeremy Johnston, and writer William Rous, who previously worked on the praised browser game Type Help.

Both The Roottrees are Dead and the recently released The Incident at Galley House trace their origins back to visually simpler browser games developed for Itch.io. Jeremy Johnston, designer of The Roottrees are Dead, collaborated with Evil Trout to transform that initial concept into a full, paid project. This successful partnership led them to work together again on their next game, inspired by another free mystery game from William Rous.

Type Help, a purely text-based mystery by Rous, was noted by PC Gamer contributor Abbie Stone as a standout title from 2025 that highlighted the genre's strength that year. The collaboration has now resulted in The Incident at Galley House, which expands beyond text-based gameplay. The new release features a visual novel-style presentation, complete with 2D illustrations, a unique 3D interface for navigating memories, and voice acting. The development process and collaboration between Rous, Johnson, and Evil Trout are detailed further in an interview with Games Industry.

The game is priced at $20 (£17.75) on Steam, with a 10% launch discount available until July 21. The positive reception on Steam suggests that the developers' approach, inspired by titles like Return of the Obra Dinn, is resonating with players.
