The upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2 will incorporate a novel gameplay mechanic utilizing the console's built-in microphone. As demonstrated in the Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, players can perform Link's iconic ocarina melodies not only through traditional button inputs but also by humming the tunes, such as "Zelda's Lullaby".
While the Switch 2's microphone was initially designed for its integrated voice chat feature, GameChat, it has seen use in other titles, including various minigames in Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV. This implementation in Ocarina of Time represents a particularly intuitive application of the hardware.
Adding to the interactive experience, Nintendo will release a purchasable Ocarina of Time-themed ocarina accessory. This peripheral will also be recognized by the Switch 2's microphone, allowing players to play songs using the physical instrument. Producer Eiji Aonuma indicated during the presentation that the game will only recognize notes for songs that have already been learned by the player. However, the possibility of custom tune input, such as for the Scarecrow's Song, remains an intriguing prospect for players.
Further enhancing the ocarina gameplay, the companion Zelda Notes app will receive an update to support Ocarina of Time. This update will enable players to utilize their smartphone's touchscreen to play the ocarina. Beyond playing along to in-game songs, users will also have the ability to compose their own melodies and share them via QR codes.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is scheduled to launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5.
