Nintendo's recent 40th Anniversary Direct for The Legend of Zelda showcased a new trailer and gameplay demo for its upcoming remake of Ocarina of Time. This reimagining for the Switch 2 appears to retain many of the original game's beloved features while introducing subtle but significant changes.
A significant overhaul is apparent in the user interface. Link's ocarina, for instance, is now accessible with a quick tap on the D-pad, eliminating the need to equip it. The item selection system has also been updated, moving from the original's five-circle layout to a single, scrollable box that appears to be controlled by the Joy-con's right bumper. Notably, a rupee counter is absent from the current on-screen display, and Link's magic meter has not yet been shown, likely indicating that this footage predates Link acquiring magic.
Combat mechanics also see minor adjustments. While the gameplay demo offered a glimpse of Link's fighting abilities, the trailer provided a clearer look at his more advanced sword skills. Around the one-minute mark, young Link is shown performing a spin attack, clearing out a group of Leevers in the Desert Colossus, indicating the return of this fan-favorite move.
Fast travel via the iconic owl has been revisited with a shift in perspective. In the original N64 and 3DS versions, owl flights were presented in a first-person view. The remake's trailer, however, shows Link soaring over Lake Hylia in a third-person perspective, suggesting a more cinematic approach to these sequences.
Fan-favorite characters and enemies are also making a comeback with their classic designs intact. The Great Fairies, known for their revealing attire in the original, appear to retain their iconic outfits, demonstrating Nintendo's commitment to faithfulness in character design.
The trailer also offered glimpses of several bosses, including Gohma and Volvagia. More closely, the witches Twinrova, guardians of the Spirit Temple, can be seen as Link prepares to face an ice beam attack. Additionally, Cuccos, the notoriously aggressive birds from the original game, make an appearance. One is seen roaming Hyrule Castle Town, while another is used by Link for gliding through the air.
Hyrule's vibrant minigames are also set to return. A detailed look at Hyrule Castle Town in the trailer reveals classic locations such as the Shooting Gallery and the Bombchu Bowling Alley, all but confirming their inclusion in the remake.
