Despite earlier announcements, Hinterland Studio, the developer behind the survival game The Long Dark, has clarified the status of its upcoming sequel, Blackfrost. While Blackfrost remains in development, the studio's immediate focus will shift to enhancing and expanding the original The Long Dark's survival mode over the next two years.

This strategic pivot comes as Hinterland acknowledges a changed landscape in the game industry. In a Steam blog post, the developer cited shifting business models, complex geopolitical situations, and uncertainty surrounding next-generation console hardware as factors influencing player spending habits. Consequently, players are increasingly returning to familiar, established games.

Hinterland plans to continue updating The Long Dark's survival mode with bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and the integration of new items and maps from the recently concluded story mode, Wintermute. To support these efforts, the studio will also release paid downloadable content (DLC). Details on this DLC are scarce, but Hinterland has stated it will expand the survival experience in novel ways, with at least one offering structured similarly to the 'Tales From The Far Territory' expansion pass and another taking a different approach.

Regarding Blackfrost, Hinterland confirmed that while some internal resources have been temporarily reallocated to support the ongoing work on The Long Dark and its DLC, the sequel has not been cancelled. The studio has committed to sharing a gameplay reveal for Blackfrost before the end of the year, indicating continued investment in the project.
