The Mandalorian and Grogu, the Star Wars spin-off film that recently saw a theatrical release, will be available for streaming on Disney Plus starting September 2. Lucasfilm and Disney confirmed the date alongside the kickoff of D23.
This marks the return of the popular duo to their original streaming home after their cinematic debut. The movie launched in theaters on May 22, ultimately grossing $345 million globally. This figure falls short of previous Star Wars theatrical releases, such as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which surpassed $1 billion in 2020.
Critical reception for The Mandalorian and Grogu varied, with some reviews describing it as a film aimed at cultivating a new generation of fans. Critic Jake Kleinman noted in a Polygon review that the movie, while featuring visual appeal for younger audiences and some nods to existing lore, may not fully satisfy long-time Star Wars enthusiasts. He commented that the film's success lies in its ability to feel like a cohesive movie despite being seemingly built around Grogu's visual charm and occasional fan service.
Prior to its streaming debut, The Mandalorian and Grogu became available for digital purchase on platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango. A physical media release is also scheduled, with a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray version set for August 25. Special editions, including a SteelBook and a "Beskar Collector's Edition," will accompany the standard Blu-ray and DVD releases.
Beyond the film, fans can also purchase a $599.99 animatronic toy version of Grogu from Hasbro, designed as a 1:1 scale replica for collectors and cosplayers.
