This September, fans of the Transformers franchise will have the opportunity to experience the 1986 animated film, The Transformers: The Movie, on the big screen once again. A 4K restoration of the beloved movie, in celebration of its 40th anniversary, will be available in cinemas starting September 17th. This special theatrical release is a collaboration between Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment, and will also feature an immersive 4DX presentation in the US and UK.
In addition to the restored film, audiences can look forward to the premiere of a new 12-minute animated short titled “Optimus Prime: Awakening” following the main feature. This new chapter includes the final original voice performance from Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, alongside a new performance from Frank Welker as Megatron and Soundwave. Cullen, who passed away earlier this year, had expressed that returning to the role was deeply meaningful, viewing it as a homecoming to a character he had shaped over decades. Welker shared that Cullen's portrayal was rooted in personal values of honesty and loyalty, and that his friend's spirit would always be a part of Optimus Prime.
The original film is set in the year 2005 and depicts the ongoing conflict between the Autobots and the Decepticons. It features a notable voice cast, including Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as Wrek-Gar, and Orson Welles as Unicron in his final film role. The story follows the Autobots as they defend themselves and the planet Cybertron from the Decepticons and the planet-devouring Unicron.
The Transformers franchise has since expanded significantly, encompassing numerous movies, animated series, and merchandise. To commemorate the anniversary, the movie's soundtrack, "The Transformers: The Movie: The Reformatted Edition," is available on streaming platforms and for purchase, including vinyl editions. This release features original tracks along with a new song, “Nothing’s Gonna Stand In Our Way,” performed by Sebastian Bach.
Hasbro is also releasing new merchandise tied to the film’s anniversary. Collectors can find an interactive electronic replica of the Autobot’s Matrix of Leadership, which includes LED lighting and plays Stan Bush’s “The Touch.” A range of Studio Series figures based on the 1986 movie is also available.
