Music superstar Abel Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd, has publicly endorsed the upcoming indie game About Fishing, a PSX-style horror title that blends fishing mechanics with a murder mystery narrative. Tesfaye's recommendation, shared in an interview with The Washington Post, has brought significant attention to the game developed by The Water Museum. He even organized a meeting with the studio after being captivated by its atmosphere.

About Fishing begins with a prologue where players assume the role of a young girl learning to fish from her father. The core fishing gameplay involves a movement-based system: players mimic flinging a line by moving the mouse back and then forward, and then must contend with the fish's struggle to reel it in. This tutorial segment concludes with the discovery of an underwater body, setting the stage for the game's central mystery.

The narrative then jumps forward in time, revealing that the girl, now an adult, must solve the murder mystery after her father has been imprisoned for the crimes. Players will encounter various types of fish, each with unique behaviors, which can be caught and sold to fund new equipment. Beyond fishing, players can also discover clues and trinkets within the game world. The small village setting introduces a cast of characters, each possessing distinct personalities and engaging dialogue.

Tesfaye described About Fishing as evoking a similar feeling to the obscure Sega Dreamcast games he encountered in his youth, citing titles like Shenmue, Seaman, and Power Stone. He reportedly spent five hours with developers from The Water Museum, receiving an early look at the game.

Polygon noted that About Fishing was also among its most recommended titles from the Steam Next Fest. Tesfaye has shown a consistent interest in gaming, frequently posting about his experiences on his dedicated Instagram account, gene.hackerman, which features content ranging from early looks at Persona 6 to interactions with notable game designers like Suda51, Yoko Taro, and Hidetaka Miyazaki.

About Fishing is slated for release on Steam in 2026. The game is being highlighted as an innovative indie title with the potential to become a sleeper hit, further emphasized by its unusual endorsement from a global music icon.
