CD Projekt Red is preparing a comprehensive remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, described by lead quest designer Paweł Sasko as a "2.0 overhaul" that goes far beyond mere visual upgrades. The studio intends to address core gameplay criticisms that have persisted since the game's original release, drawing parallels to the transformative 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077.
Sasko stated at Gamescom 2026 that gameplay was the most frequently criticized aspect of The Witcher 3, and this remaster is primarily focused on fixing those issues. The development team applied the design principles learned from Cyberpunk 2077's RedEngine 4 to The Witcher 3's RedEngine 3. This approach involved analyzing and resolving player frustrations related to exploration, Geralt's movement, and the lack of finisher attacks, which CD Projekt Red claims will significantly alter the player experience.
Unlike the game's last major update, which focused primarily on visual enhancements for newer consoles, this remaster targets more fundamental improvements. Features from the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion will also be integrated. The changes are designed to make combat more interactive and engaging, moving away from an over-reliance on passive skills in favor of more active abilities. New combat tools, such as an iron chain—a reference to the books and the first game's CGI introduction—will also be added to provide more dynamic options during encounters.
The majority of these underlying enhancements and changes will be available as part of a free upgrade in October. This approach aims to ensure that players can immediately benefit from the revamped mechanics and skill trees without needing to start their game progress from scratch, making the prospect of diving back into the world of The Witcher 3 more appealing than ever.
