CD Projekt Red, alongside co-devs Fool's Theory, showcased content from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's "Songs of the Past" expansion during a recent behind-closed-doors preview. However, the accompanying remaster upgrades for the base game appear to be the more compelling prospect for returning players. These enhancements, targeting combat, movement, UI, and role-playing elements, are slated for release on September 29th, preceding the "Songs of the Past" expansion.
The preview demonstrated a significant overhaul to combat, presenting Geralt with more fluid and responsive swordplay. Attacks appear faster and combos are strung together with greater fluidity, suggesting a more nimble combat experience compared to the original game. Improved camera work also aids in targeting specific enemies during engagements, especially when facing groups.
While direct judgment of "swordfeel" is impossible without hands-on play, the visible intent to address one of Wild Hunt's persistent flaws is notable. The remaster's new features are designed to synergize with "Songs of the Past," introducing new finishing moves that incorporate items like the silver chain found in the expansion. One demonstrated move involved Geralt using the chain to pull a monster into blade range for a swift decapitation.
The "Songs of the Past" expansion itself introduced a new region called Letten, described as an attractively verdant area. The expansion's plot reportedly centers on the disappearance of Dandelion, providing a personal hook for the narrative. Gameplay within "Songs of the Past" also featured new bestiary entries, such as Thornblooms and Swarmions, which require the enhanced combat mechanics to defeat.
Despite these additions, the preview left questions about the necessity of the "Songs of the Past" expansion, especially following previous "Geralt's Last Adventure" narratives. The remaster's more substantial improvements, though smaller in scope than a full expansion, currently appear to be the stronger draw for players considering a return to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The remaster is being offered as a free upgrade for owners of the original game.
