CD Projekt Red has confirmed that its upcoming remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will support save file transfers, allowing players to continue their progress from previous versions of the game. The developer also stated that previously unlocked achievements and trophies will carry over with the upgrade.
This feature means that players who have invested dozens or even hundreds of hours into their journeys as Geralt will not need to begin anew when the remaster launches on September 29. The confirmation comes amidst a trend where save compatibility is becoming increasingly rare in modern game re-releases, with some publishers opting not to provide upgrade paths or save transfer options for owners of original versions.
The save transfer functionality, while seemingly minor compared to the graphical enhancements and reworked combat expected in the remaster, is a significant player-first feature. The Witcher 3 remaster will be a free upgrade for all existing owners of the game. Additionally, the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions will also be included for free with the remaster.
The release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered precedes the launch of a new expansion for the decade-old RPG, titled Songs of the Past, which is scheduled for release next year. This remaster is positioned as a way for both returning and new players to reacquaint themselves with the world before the arrival of the new content. CD Projekt Red has also announced plans to release The Witcher 4 in 2028.
