CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the first look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's upcoming expansion, "Songs of the Past," will be showcased during Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 25. The event will be hosted by Geoff Keighley.

This upcoming expansion is notable given the base game's 2015 release date. However, The Witcher 3 has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 65 million copies and ranking among the top 10 best-selling games of all time. CD Projekt Red had previously announced in a 2025 earnings call that new content was in development for the title, with "Songs of the Past" officially revealed in May as part of the 10-year anniversary of the "Blood and Wine" add-on.

Details regarding the expansion's scope are still emerging. CD Projekt Red is collaborating with Fool's Theory on the project, which is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in 2027. CD Projekt co-CEO Michal Nowakowski described the expansion's scope as potentially comparable to "Blood and Wine," a DLC that typically takes players 25 to 40 hours to complete, though he noted this is subjective and depends on individual playthroughs.

Nowakowski characterized "Songs of the Past" as a "reminder" of the franchise rather than a direct prelude to the upcoming "The Witcher 4," which does not yet have a release window. The expansion will feature Geralt of Rivia as the protagonist, in contrast to Ciri's lead role in the next main installment. The release of "Songs of the Past" was originally planned for 2026 but was postponed to ensure the "best possible result from the consumer standpoint."
