CD Projekt Red has officially targeted a 2028 release window for The Witcher 4, according to joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski. This announcement comes as the studio prepares to showcase expansion content for its predecessor at Gamescom 2026.

Fans of the series, who have waited over a decade since the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will need to exercise further patience. "I know it's a bit of a wait, and you'd love to play it sooner, but let the team cook," Nowakowski stated in a video message. This new window supersedes the previous indication that The Witcher 4 would not launch by the end of 2026, without providing a definitive timeframe beyond that.

CD Projekt Red harbors ambitious plans for its Witcher franchise, aiming to release a trilogy of games within a six-year span. If The Witcher 4 arrives in 2028 as planned, this schedule could position The Witcher 6 for a 2034 release. Such a compressed timeline for a trilogy is notably more aggressive than the eight years it took to release the original Witcher trilogy between 2007 and 2015. The studio acknowledges the industry-wide trend of increasing video game development times and the inherent possibility of unforeseen delays impacting their schedule.

Before The Witcher 4's anticipated launch, players can look forward to "Songs of the Past," an upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This new adventure, which shifts focus from Geralt to Ciri, is slated for release next year on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The expansion is expected to be featured at Gamescom, where Nowakowski also hinted at "a surprise or two" during the studio's livestreams throughout the event. The expansion was first announced in May.
