Netflix's The Witcher is reportedly facing a delay, with its fifth and final season now targeting a 2027 release instead of the previously expected 2026. The shift comes despite the season having wrapped filming in September 2025, according to a report from What's On Netflix.
Seasons four and five of the series were filmed back-to-back, a decision showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich explained was treated as one large narrative arc. "We knew we had to break it up in terms of how it would be launched on Netflix, but truly it’s the story of this family journey back together," Hissrich stated last year, emphasizing the cohesive nature of the combined 16 episodes.
The Witcher debuted on Netflix in 2019 with Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The series saw a significant change with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt starting in season four, following Cavill's departure. Season four itself garnered some of the series' lowest critical reviews and faced viewer backlash regarding the recasting.
While the Netflix series navigates its production schedule, fans of the franchise also have CD Projekt Red's upcoming game, The Witcher 4, to anticipate. This new game is set to feature Ciri as the primary protagonist and is intended to launch a new trilogy of titles.
