Tom Holland, who portrays Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has expressed uncertainty regarding the feasibility of adapting the iconic black symbiote suit for live-action, particularly after witnessing its rendition in Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Holland suggested that the game's visual execution of the suit might set a standard that is difficult to replicate on film.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland reflected on the visual approach to the symbiote suit. While acknowledging Tobey Maguire's practical suit from Spider-Man 3, he questioned how a similar, or even more alien, look could be achieved in the MCU without extensive computer-generated imagery. "They did it so well in [Marvel's Spider-Man 2], and I don't know how you make a suit that's similar to the one in the game without having a CG component. I don't know how you would do that," Holland stated.
The depiction of the symbiote suit has been a point of discussion among fans, with varying opinions on whether it should appear more fabric-like or adopt a more fluid, viscous texture. Insomniac's approach in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 leaned towards the latter, a direction Holland seemingly finds challenging to translate to live-action without heavy CG reliance.
Holland's previous MCU suits have often utilized CG for smoothing and refinement, a process he felt sometimes detracted from their character. In contrast, he noted that Spider-Man: Brand New Day embraced imperfections like wrinkles and visible ear outlines, offering a more tactile appearance. The possibility of a practical symbiote suit, as seen with Maguire's iteration, remains, but achieving a more alien aesthetic could necessitate significant CG work.
The introduction of the symbiote into the MCU has been hinted at since the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Tom Hardy's Venom was transported to the MCU, leaving a piece of itself behind. It remains unclear if this fragment will ever find its way to Peter Parker. The character's acquisition of the black suit is a significant event in the comics, often associated with the Secret Wars storyline, though Marvel's adaptations often diverge from their source material.
