Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the series' inaugural adventure, is set to introduce significant gameplay overhauls including an RPG-like skill tree, herb brewing for buffs, and a new "Focus" meter. Developed by Trek to Yomi studio Flying Wild Hog in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, the remake aims to modernize the 1996 original for contemporary players while incorporating elements inspired by the recent Tomb Raider reboot trilogy.
The game will feature a skill tree where players can spend in-game artifacts to unlock weapon upgrades and enhance Lara Croft's abilities, such as reducing damage taken and improving healing. The addition of herb brewing allows for further character customization through various temporary benefits. Design director Jason Epps noted that the ability to directly influence and increase Lara's power, as seen in the Survivor series, contributes to a more engaging player experience.
A new "Focus" system, detailed by game director Raul Siqueira, will allow players to slow down time during combat. This mechanic is designed to enable players to perform Lara's signature acrobatic maneuvers and is intended to celebrate the character's agile nature. The Focus meter will be charged through actions taken in combat, such as dealing and receiving damage, and dodging attacks.
These RPG-like additions have prompted discussion among veteran Tomb Raider fans who had anticipated a return to the franchise's more traditional gameplay roots, rather than an approach leaning towards the reboot trilogy's mechanics. The exact feel of these new systems in practice remains to be seen.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was recently delayed and is now scheduled for release on February 12, 2027. Following this title, Crystal Dynamics plans to release an all-new Tomb Raider game, titled Catalyst, in 2028.
