Creative Assembly has unveiled a new mechanic for Total War: Warhammer 40,000 that allows players to place mortally wounded Space Marine characters into Dreadnoughts, enabling them to continue fighting. This feature, revealed during a recent Alpha Strike livestream and detailed in a PC Gamer report, is designed to keep beloved characters engaged even after sustaining fatal injuries.
Will, a Campaign Designer for the game, explained the rationale behind the Dreadnought system. "It wouldn't be Space Marines if you couldn't take the mushed-up, almost corpse of a Space Marine, stuff it in a big metal tin can, and send it back into battle as a Dreadnought," he stated. The system aims to allow characters who have faced death to "continue to serve the Emperor in a slightly chonkier form." Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders are being treated as rare, powerful, and ancient war machines that are highly valuable assets.
Dreadnoughts are essentially life-support sarcophagi equipped with powerful weaponry and given mobility. Typically, Space Marines interred within them face centuries of existence, often losing their minds while being roused from stasis for battles or to impart wisdom to younger chapter members.
The Alpha Strike livestream also provided insights into the campaign structure. Each solar system will serve as a distinct campaign, with players battling across multiple regions on each planet. Upon completing a campaign within a system, players will advance to a wider Crusade Theatre, where they can begin new campaigns in other systems, carrying over their existing characters and retinues. Approximately ten systems are expected per theatre, culminating in a final confrontation on Armageddon. While completing every campaign within a theatre is not mandatory, the overall scope is reportedly larger than Creative Assembly's previous titles, including Immortal Empires.
Further details from the stream highlighted several other features. Heroes will have customizable bodyguard units through the use of 'followers.' All unit weapon loadouts will be fully customizable. Planetary governors will need to be appeased to unlock certain diplomatic actions and support. Space Marines can also draft Planetary Defense Armies from the Imperial Guard for support, and the Imperial Guard will have unique planetary structures, such as artillery batteries and deathstrike missile launchers.
